The U.S. Department of Energy has established a new office focused on coordinating the government's support and use of artificial intelligence and other cutting-edge technologies. The newly created Office of Key and Emerging Technologies will oversee fields such as artificial intelligence, biotechnology, quantum computing, and semiconductors. Under the leadership of Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer Helena Hughes, the office's early priorities include supporting the use of artificial intelligence in nuclear fusion energy development. The office will also test the vulnerability of AI models to hacking, improve the energy efficiency of supercomputers, and promote wider access to the Department of Energy's data for scientists and entrepreneurs.
